LOG-DRAFTING-TUNNEL / FINLAND

from the pierlike little concrete harbour ,wich is now used for the small boats wich cover nearly all the shores of the lakes i followed the leavecovered railswaytracks uphill. following a little ditch i came to the entrance of the older and much smaller tunnel. in front of it were some sofas and a table ,also they were quite rotten it seemed like a wonderful place to hang out to me. the entrance was fenced up with an iron grid, but i was lucky ...some bars were cutted out already, so it was no problem to enter. there was a kicked-in wooden door with a red cross painted on it and some more debris and garbage (mostly spraycans). the lower half of the tunnel was made of woodplanks wich were nearly decomposed by now and also burned to coal on some parts, and there are a lot of rusty nails sticking out of them to get serious scratches. after maybe ten or twenty metres i found an old rusty bed and tried to imagin how it would be like to sleep inside the tunnel, besides the damp climate it was very silent, just some dripping sounds from the ceiling. after that the ground became very muddy and it seemed that the wood has been decomposed total in this part of the tunneln no wonder it was also the part with the most water dripping. there were the obligatory stalactites, [wich i love since i found some in an forgotten cellarroom underneath the stairs of a house i lived in for a very short time.] some were more than 20 cm long and on the ground were quite big ones too(for a building like that). some fungus or mushrooms were growing on the woodpanels on the ground and on one part it looked like there was an white furry animal with a big watching eye, the first moment the lightbeam from my lamp crossed it i was scared. but i went further until i arrived at the end. on this side the entrance was closed. propably buried under the motorway wich could be heared from the smal hole on the ceiling of the shaft wich was build here. there was ladder wich was rotten to the core, the lower parts crumbled by the touch of my hand, so it was impossible to climp up to the platforms wich were build in the height of two metres. this looked like a very nice hideaway. i was very impressed by the sound of the cars passing by over the ground, it was very very quiet and filtered through the pipe leading out.

the newer and bigger tunnel wich is located next to the smal one (above) was visited by me after i have been to the smaller one in the evening, but then i decided to come back the next day so i have some daylight. it turned out to be a good idea, i think. this was not as interesting to me as the small one. but it was amazing how different the athmospheres were in both tunnels. the small on gave me a claustrophobic and organic impression and the big one reminded me more of a spaceship or a hughe freightcarrier, more technical i would say.
